The open bar was her friend, and the third margarita had worked its magic. John leaned against the wall near the dance floor, watching the swirl of bodies with a lazy smile. The music pulsed through him, a pleasant vibration that harmonized with the buzz in his head. His cares seemed miles away.

He had a vague feeling of lightness, a feeling of not having to be anything but himself. The world, for the moment, felt uncomplicated and bright.

The carefree feeling vanished when he caught a glimpse of Emily. The margarita lost its flavor, and his smile tightened. He straightened, instantly becoming aware of how his shirt fit (or didn't fit) and suddenly wishing he’d chosen something, anything, else to wear.
